Discover Karuizawa

From A Good Day Karuizawa Riverside, you can easily begin your journey to explore Karuizawa — a place where nature, light, and a slow rhythm of life blend together naturally.

EXPLORE AT YOUR OWN PACE

A place to feel, not to rush

Karuizawa is not a destination for rushing through experiences, but a place to feel every moment through walking, cycling, and observing the subtle seasonal changes of nature. Below are carefully selected experiences that let you explore Karuizawa in harmony with its natural pace of life.

Tour of Lakes & Scenic Walks

In Karuizawa, water sets the pace. At first light, Kumoba Pond lies perfectly still, holding the forest and the sky on its surface. Follow the cool air into the trees and Shiraito Falls appears, a wide veil of fine white threads over moss-dark rock. The mood turns elemental at Onioshidashi, beneath Mount Asama, then softens by the calm lake at Taliesin — places to walk slowly, and let the light do the rest.

  • Kumoba Pond, Shiraito Falls, Onioshidashi Volcanic Park
  • Easy walking paths and open water views
  • Loveliest in the soft light of early morning

Tour of Town & Cultural Streets

Old Karuizawa carries its history gently. Along the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza, bakeries and small shops open onto a street where locals and holidaymakers share the same unhurried afternoons. A few steps away the noise falls into silence: the timber chapel of St. Paul's, the Shaw Memorial Church — the oldest in Karuizawa — and the Stone Church, where rock, water, and light meet. A corner of town best discovered on foot.

  • Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Street, St. Paul's Catholic Church
  • An unhurried walk through Old Karuizawa
  • Shops and cafés open through the afternoon

Tour of Forest & Nature Experiences

Beyond the streets, Karuizawa is forest almost without end. Walk the woods of Hoshino and Naka-Karuizawa with a guide, or arrive with Picchio at dawn, when the trees fill with birdsong you would otherwise pass by. Cycle or wander along soft, shaded paths — out to the cold fall of Sengataki, or up to the Former Usui Pass and its wide sweep of mountains. The surest way to know the forest is simply to be within it. Karuizawa is also one of Japan's finest golf destinations — its courses built deep into the highland forest, where the trees define the fairways as much as the flags.

  • Forest walks (Hoshino / Naka-Karuizawa), Picchio wildlife watching, cycling routes
  • Walk and cycle at your own pace
  • Birdwatching and seasonal nature tours
